I'm an interdisciplinary Humanities researcher specialising in cultural theory and cultural memory. My publications span memory and trauma studies, film and TV, literature and other cultural forms and practices. Since moving to Australia, I have continued to write and research in memory studies, particularly in relation to place and migration. My research is informed by a range of cultural theories, including psychoanalysis. During my career in London I was influential in the international development of the interdisciplinary field of memory studies. I co-edited the path-breaking Routledge series Studies in Memory and Narrative', convened the long-running London Cultural Memory' seminar and a series on Memory in National Contexts' and, with my UEL colleague Katharine Hodgkin, organised the first major international conference in Memory Studies (Frontiers of Memory', Institute of Education, September 1999). Publications include ed. Memory and Methodology (2000); co-ed. Regimes of Memory (2003); co-ed. Contested Pasts (2003); co-ed. Culture and the Unconscious (2007); ed. Public Emotions (2007); The Sexual Politics of Time (2007); co-ed. Memory: Histories, Theories Debates (2010); (co-ed. Translating Worlds: Migration, Memory and Culture. In 2013 I was appointed Dean: Research in the Division for the Education, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of South Australia, moving to a research-only Professorship in Cultural Theory at the end of 2015, before accepting adjunct positions at Monash University and then at the University of Melbourne. I am currently partnering with the Melbourne Film Festival to explore memories of film festivalgoing, co-editing the Palgrave Handbook of Memory and Literature and continuing to research and publish on cultural memory.
